This interesting antique stick is carved from a single piece of hardwood, the two upper sections slightly scalloped and ornamented with knodules carved in relief and forming concentric spiralling patterns. The stick is gently tapered in section, the top surmounted with a flattened spherical knop. This stick was collected by brought back from New Zealand c. 1880 by a member of the Barker family. Alfred Charles Barker, (1819-73) of this prominent family was a trained surgeon, collector and well known pioneer of'wet plate' photography. Early to mid 19th century.
