German Wolchow Stick Dated 1943 Carved Ostfront Smolensk
WW2 German Eastern Front carved Wolchow stick with geometric designs and large Iron Cross to the centre. Dated 1943 and with "OSTFRONT SMOLENSK". This example has had a later applied brass cap from a cartridge mounted to the end.

The city of Smolensk is situated 220 miles southwest of Moscow. On July 16th 1941 the Germans captured the city and repulsed Russian counter attacks.

In late 1943 Goring ordered the total destruction of the city in lines with the scorched earth policy, but this order was ignored by Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici, resulting in his dismissal as a commander of the town. The city was liberated by the Red Army on 25th September 1943 and was given the rare title of Hero City.
