Vintage WWI Era Folk Art Carved Figural Injured Black Soldier Cane Walking Stick
1920 well carved figural walking stick representing a wounded African American soldier in uniform. Probably created by a POW or hospitalized soldier. The figure has its arm across its chest as if broken. There are two chevrons on the shoulders, suggesting the rank of corporal. A V-shaped design at the neck and chest represents a medal or decoration. The middle third of the cane is surrounded by a detailed, high relief, carved snake with scales, intertwined with leaves. Very good condition, no cracks, some loss of finish at tip, chip at base of figure. 29 1/2 inches long overall, with the soldier being a little more than 11 inches tall and 2 inches wide at the widest point. A rare and attractive piece.
