This listing is for a vintage 1860's walking stick/cane with a snake motif and is carved in the fashion of the snake head wrapping upward around the shaft of the cane toward the figure at its top. This striking artistry of the beautifully carved figure of a praying woman being pursued by a slithering snake is reminiscent of the Biblical tale of the Garden of Eden. Folk art canes often offer stories that add richly to their one-of-a-kind appeal. This remarkable cane is carved from one piece of wood.
The color and patina are warm, the best of its kind from that era. Certainly what one wants to find on old folk art canes. The cane is carved from some sort of hardwood and shows good wear, flaking and two knicks. One toward its top, just below the figure; and one at the tip of the figure's nose. No cracks in the cane. The cane ends on a blunt tip. The cane is 37" tall X 1-1/2" at its widest point. The snake is 14-1/2 long and wraps around the shaft of the cane 3 times. Great color, patina; a commanding presence, and it feels very good to hold.
A nice old cane that would make a great addition to any folk art cane collection. Please see photos for more details as they are an important part of the description.
