A very early 1800`s or even 1750`s English carved wooden stick - cane - staff - wand. Healers stick hand carved from Elder wood.Measuring 80cm long and at its widest point [beak] 6.7cm. Top detail of male face one side and bird like plague mask to other. Then 21cm down three faces each with panel above. In these 3 panels some words readable which looks like to me. Wood has minor splits concurrent with age.
Overall IN VERY GOOD UNTOUCHED CONDITION. I have had this stick for ten years now. This text refers to saint Abel a well known patron saint of the blind and lame , Bishop of Reims boniface [d 754]. Elder wood is said to hold magical powers [commonly wizard wands are made from this hard to carve wood]. Plague sticks still common at the time of the great plague which ended in 1750 , used to keep people at a distance , and to touch the ill.
