ASKLEPIOS (Asclepius) 19th c. Antique Walking Stick / cane with Carved snake

19th c exceptionally carved walking stick / cane with a snake winding around a wooden shaft. This is a depiction of the rod of Asklepios god of medicine...

The Ebonized snake and shaft. The snake has what looks to be glass bead eyes. Not sure of the wood of the handle. Could possibly be satin wood, birch or some kind of fancy fruit wood to the best of my knowledge brass cap on bottom.

Steel threaded bolt between handle and shaft. ASKLEPIOS (Asclepius) was the god of medicine. He was also the patron god, and reputed ancestor, of the Asklepiades (Asclepiades), the ancient guild of doctors. Asklepios was the son of Apollon and the Trikkaian (Triccaean) princess Koronis (Coronis).

His mother died in labour and when she was laid out on the pyre, Apollon cut the unborn child from her womb. From this Asklepios received his name which means to cut open. Asklepios was raised by the centaur Chiron who instructed him in the art of medicine. He grew so skilled in the craft that he was able to restore the dead to life.

This was a crime against the natural order and so Zeus destroyed him with a thunderbolt. Please feel free to ask any questions or to request detail photos. The item "ASKLEPIOS (Asclepius) 19th c. Antique Walking Stick / cane with Carved snake" is in sale since Wednesday, January 16, 2019.
