This is an old, authentic, superbly carved walking cane (sometimes also called a walking stick) from Java, Indonesia. It was collected in the Eastern Java village of Pandaan. It was created entirely with animal horn material (from local domesticated water buffalo), except for what appear to be red beads inset as eyes in the sockets of the ornately carved mythical Naga head. Several horn pieces separated by white accent rings create a tapered design from top to bottom.
The cane shows signs of gentle use - the Naga head detail perhaps smoothed a bit from being the handle, and the foot area worn and scuffed from ground contact. Overall, the piece is not as solid as a single piece of hardwood essentially because it is made from many small horn sections most likely collared over a thinner stick material/rod inside. It was likely a special use cane versus an everyday device - perhaps ceremonial. Included with this sale is a custom metal display stand. Both the cane and the display stand are in excellent condition. The cane itself measures 34.5 inches (high) x 4 1/2 inches (wide at the head); when on the stand, it measures a total of 35 inches high.
