Meiji Era Japanese Walking Stick/Cane W/ Hand-Carved Samurai & Black Kite - 89cm. This antique walking stick is made fully from 9 sections of bovine bone. On the top of the shaft, there is a hand-carved Samurai with his sword in a bees nest. Further down the shaft is a hand-carved black kite sitting on a large tree with a traditional Japanese landscape background and a replaced metal ferrule. Samurai were the hereditary military nobility and officer caste of medieval and early-modern Japan from the late 12th century to their abolition in 1876.
They were the well-paid retainers of the daimyo. They had high prestige and special privileges such as wearing two swords.
